If the cause of death is uncertain then the hospital or doctor will refer the details to a Coroner. The Coroner will investigate further and decide the next course of action which may be a post mortem or an inquest etc.

When the Coroner has completed his tasks he will authourise the provision of a 'cause of death' certificate and the next of kin will be advised. After this the Funeral can take place and the Probate process can begin.
